![]() First off, sure I may have over estimated the amount of subsonic ammo at 80%, but I do believe, after looking at some ballistic charts that, that number is still over 60%, even for many commercially available 115-124r. Let me clarify a couple of things though. There is definitely a difference between the two. If you ever get up to PA, give me a PM and I can put on a demo for you.Ī couple of those video links are very good at showing the difference, thanks for sharing those. I recommend going to a suppressor shoot and experimenting with different ammo and setups.ĮTA: The reason we buy subsonic 9mm ammo is to avoid the "crack". It's when you start talking about centerfire rifles that are all supersonic that 3-4db isn't very discernable. Yes, 4db in a subsonic platform is noticeable. The "crack" is what your neighbor will hear. This is going to be most noticeable to others standing nearby and downrange. The difference is that supersonic will have the added "crack". The difference at the muzzle and what the actual shooter hears will be around the same sound level. What?, the "crack" is what defines supersonic from subsonic and what Jack crab and I are referring to. "we all know that it's not the supersonic "crack" because obviously subsonic ammo won't create that sound, but it's the pressure being released from the barrel making the report. Using compact pocket pistols is a totally different discussion. Most people use FS pistols and SUB guns (MP5, Scorpion EVO, AR15 in 9mm etc.) to shoot suppressed which will ultimately yield faster velocities. ![]() Most 9mm being sold is 117 and 124 which is supersonic. No, the majority of 9mm being sold is inheriently supersonic (through most FS pistols and environmental conditions). What's the quietest are we talking when running 9mm, 123dB avg? Most full power seems to be in the 127dB range. ![]() ![]() That being said, ammo loaded to lower overall FPS will likely have a corresponding lower overall pressure which in turn would make a lower perceived dB rating. Although 80% or more of 9mm ammo is subsonic, because I'm sure they are using a full size 5" barrel to maximize ballistic data on their packages, we all know that it's not the supersonic "crack" because obviously subsonic ammo won't create that sound, but it's the pressure being released from the barrel making the report. ![]()
